Owner, Becky Collins, bought 308 Saint John Street (ca. 1835) and founded Doodads, Inc. in 2003 with one Fair Trade vendor, a friend who made jewelry and the support of her family. After more than ten years in business, she now works with over 100 Fair Trade vendors throughout the year, several local jewelry artisans and happily still has the support of her family. She didn't know much about Fair Trade when she started, just that she liked the concept. Working with artisans and farmers in developing parts of the World without exploitation or child labor; seemed like a nice way to do business.
Doodads is the only dedicated Fair Trade store in Harford County or the neighboring Cecil County. Regular patrons and visitors often remark that “the shop has a peaceful, happy feeling”. Becky attributes that to the inventory and how it's acquired, by treating people fairly. It is also a reflection of the dedicated staff who are always happy to provide a smile and an explanation of where an item is from or demonstrate how to play a “singing bowl”. It's our company policy to be the friendliest shop in town.
